Early handling effect on female rat spatial and non-spatial learning and memory

This study aims at providing an insight into early handling procedures on learning and memory performance in adult female rats. Early handling procedures were started on post-natal day 2 until 21, and consisted in 15 min, daily separations of the dams from their litters. Assessment of declarative memory was carried out in the novel-object recognition task; spatial learning, reference- and working memory were evaluated in the Morris water maze (MWM). Effects of mechanical stimulation on cell cycle duration in rat gingival fibroblast progenitor cells

The aim of this investigation was to estimate cell cycle duration in rat gingival fibroblast progenitor cells in steady-state control and during sustained mechanical stimulation. Elastics (0.15 mm thick) were inserted between maxillary M1 and M2 of 8 wk-old male rats which were labelled with H3-TdR and killed in groups of 6-7 animals together with equal-sized groups of labelled control animals at intervals between 1-168 h. Precise annual changes in the numbers of "synaptic" ribbons and spherules in the rat pineal gland.

Although pineal "synaptic" ribbons (SR) are frequently examined by means of quantitative electron microscopy, their functional significance remains unclear. The same is true for related structures—"synaptic" spherules (SPH). In the course of such studies, it has been noted that SR counts may differ from laboratory to laboratory. Because seasonal changes may play a role, a 2-year study was performed on male rats kept under routine laboratory conditions and killed at monthly intervals during daytime or nighttime. We have analyzed the temporal patterns of behaviour of male rats of the Wistar and DA/Han strains on the central platform of the elevated plus maze. The ethogram encompassed 10 behavioural elements. Durations, frequencies and latencies showed quantitative differences as to walking and sniffing activities. Wistar rats displayed significantly lower latency and significantly higher durations and frequencies of walking activities. DA/Han rats showed a significant increase of sniffing duration. Strain Differences in Open-Field and Elevated Plus-Maze Behavior of Rats Without and With Pretest Handling

Behavior of two rat strains was analyzed with and without 1-week pretest handling. Male rats (150-200 g body weight) of the strains PVG/OlaHsd (PVG) and Hsd:Sprague-DawleySD (SPRD) were tested once in a standard open field and an enriched open field and twice in an elevated plus-maze. Behavioral analysis revealed significant differences between the two strains and differential effects of the pretest handling procedure. SPRD rats displayed higher levels of activity and exploratory behavior than the PVG rats, whereas PVG rats were obviously less anxious. Effect of pinealectomy and circadian rhythm on avoidance behavior in the male rat.

Male adult albino rats were divided into six groups: two pinealectomized (Px); two sham-operated (Sh) and two serving as controls (C). Half of these groups were studied in daylight and the other half at night. The animals were open-field tested and then conditioned by the avoidance behavior test in the appropriate light period. No differences were observed among the groups when they were conditioned in the dark; however, the Px were conditioned significantly more rapidly than Sh or C in daylight. Intragroup comparisons between night/day conditioning showed them to be similar in Px but more rapid at night in both Sh and C. The Sh group is unique and not comparable to controls.

Regional glucose uptake and protein synthesis in isolated perfused rat hearts immediately after training and later

The effect of 10 weeks of running training and termination of training on the regional distribution of cardiac glucose uptake and protein synthesis were studied in isolated perfused hearts in male rats. The left ventricular glucose uptake in hearts from sedentary rats was 1.87 +/- 0.14 mumol/min per g protein (mean +/- SE), being about 30% higher in the subendocardial than in the subepicardial layer (p less than 0.05). The gradient of left ventricular glucose uptake was similar to the controls in the rats retired from training, but was absent in the trained animals. Sex-related Differences in Disposition and Response to Phenprocoumon in Rats

Abstract The pharmacokinetics and the pharmacological response to phenprocoumon have been studied in female and male inbred Lewis-Wistar rats.
